Description:
Center for Theoretical Physics (CTP) is a division of the IP dedicated to pure theoretical research in a wide range of topics in modern theoretical physics. Members of CTP have broad international research collaboration. CTP staff is engaged in the Graduate School activities, and there is quite a number of graduate students working towards their PhD’s. CTP participates in organization of international schools and conferences.

* The Particles and Field Theory group focuses its research activities on the problems related to studying the structure and unification of gravity with other basic interactions, string theory and anomalies. The group for Mathematical Physics restrains its activities on quantum models on noncomutative and adelic spaces.

* The group for Quantum Mechanics and Optics studies mainly the matter-wave interference and the stability of the dynamics of quantum systems.

* Condensed Matter Theory

* The Theoretical Atomic and Molecular Physics group studies photoionization and photodissociation processes, dynamics of complex quantum systems and relativistic effects in atoms.

* The group for Nonlinear Optics and Plasma Dynamics investigates optical solitons, vortices, and self-organized structures in crystals, and nonlinear phenomena in magnetized plasmas.

Description:
Scientific computing has become a tool as vital as experimentation and theory for dealing with scientific challenges of the twenty-first century. The Scientific Computing Laboratory (SCL) at the Institute of Physics in Belgrade has as its aim to be on the forefront of the development of scientific computing as a novel research tool. SCL sets before itself the goal to be one of the focal points for high-performance computing in Serbia as well as in the region of South East Europe (SEE). In the context of this goal SCL is using GRID technology and taking part in the European Union's FP6 projects EGEE-II and SEE-GRID-2.

The scientists working at SCL look at simulations and models as heuristic tools in a broad problem-solving process. High-performance computing facilities make possible the first step in this process - a view of new and previously inaccessible domains in science and the building up of intuition regarding the new phenomenology. The final goal of this process is to translate this new found intuition into better algorithms and new analytical results.

Scientific computing has been nurtured in physics, in particular in fields such as high energy physics, condensed matter physics, cosmology and astrophysics. Today we are witnessing the application of scientific computing in an ever widening circle of fields: modern finance, networking, genetics, etc. Ultimately this cross cultural effect might be one of the most important consequences of the enfolding revolution in scientific computing. SCL feels privileged to take part in and contribute to such inter-disciplinary efforts.

Description:
The main objective of the Center for Experimental Physics is to apply experimental techniques and models to the study of fundamental processes in physics, chemical physics and atmospheric physics and chemistry. In addition the CEP is host to a number of applied physics projects



* Subject of the research in Laboratory for Multidiscliplinar Reseaerch:

- Study the optical and other physical properties of solids at high pressures.

- Investigations of environment factors influence on luminescent and optical dependence between physiological and phatological state of biologicals objects.

* The Laboratory for Atomic, Molecular and Laser Spectroscopy is involved in the investigation of multi-photon processes in SF6 molecules induced by CO2 lasers in the presence of buffer gases.

* The Gaseous Electronics Laboratory is involved in studies of ionized gases motivated by possible non-equilibrium plasma applications. Interests of the laboratory include collisions and transport of charged particle swarms, granular systems, low pressure breakdown and discharges, kinetics and applications of collisional DC and RFplasmas. Plasma applications include plasma etching, treatment of polymers, seeds and textile and sources of light.

* The Laboratory for Plasma Physics studies the kinetic and optical properties of low temperature plasma. This includes radiation and ionization recombination processes in ion-atom and electron-ion-atom collisions. Studies in analytical spectroscopy and dynamics of ionosphere are also carried out.

* The Laboratory for Atmospheric Physics and Optical Metrology studies pollution sources as well as the transport of pollutants. Applications include monitoring of atmospheric pollutants and development of automated meteorological stations. Another field of interest centers on luminescence technologies including sources, methods of measurement and specific devices.

* Activities of the Environmental Physics Laboratory include fundamental and applied research focused on atmospheric processes, transport and transformation of pollutants and their impact on environment.

Description:
At the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN) in Geneva, a new particle accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is presently being constructed. In parallel to the accelerator two general purpose detectors, ATLAS and CMS, are constructed to investigate the proton proton collisions in the new energy domain and to study fundamental questions of particle physics such as the mechanism responsible for the spontaneous symmetry breaking in the Standard Model. ATLAS is designed as a general purpose detector, capable of running at the highest beam intensities and providing the means for two major goals to the physics studies at LHC: discovery potential for new physics and potential to do precision measurements of known objects. In collaboration with about 2000 physicists our group is involved in the ATLAS detector shield construction.Our group is also engaged in the studies of physics potentials of ATLAS experiment in searching for supersymmetric particles as well as in the studies of the capability for the precise measurements of the top quark mass and sensitivity limits for anomalous triple gauge boson couplings.

Laboratory for High Energy Physics cooperates closely with the Faculty of Physics, University of Belgrade and Faculty of Natural Sciences, University of Kragujevac.

Low-Background Laboratory for Nuclear Physics

Description:
Low-Background Laboratory for Nuclear Physics has three separate facilities: the underground laboratory, plasma focus device and etching facility for solid-state track detectors. It is equipped with detector systems for low-background detection of gamma rays, of cosmic-ray muons and neutrons. The underground laboratory is situated at the depth equivalent to 30 meters of water, what reduces the cosmic-ray muon flux 4.5 times as compared to the flux at the surface.

Description:
Our research interest is mainly concerned with optical spectroscopy of wide group of materials (from semiconductors and high-temperature superconductors to insulators and magnetic materials). The principal interests of the Center are vibrational properties of these materials. Present experimental methods include Raman scattering and optical measurements (from far-infrared to UV spectral range), luminescence measurements, as well as other optical measurements in a wide spectral range under high pressure and low temperatures. In addition, electronic properties are investigated using Hall effect experiments. There is also a substantial theoretical effort in computing phonon and magnon dispersion of the materials under investigation

Photonics center

Description:
Develops fundamental knowledge and innovative technologies in the field of photonics. Our goal is to work on important problems in basic research , to translate discoveries into useful applications and educate new generation of students and young researches in this emerging field of science and technologies.
We research coherent effects in laser atom interaction, working with hot and cold atoms. We have narrowed resonances due to coherent population trapping using novel techniques and Raman-Ramsey spectroscopic methods.
We pioneered holographic methods in dentistry, in developing adjustable and deformable microlenses which can improve resolution of optical devices.
We are developing functional materials, photonic crystals by holographic methods, and metamaterials using photo-lithography. These materials have grate prospects for applications in telecommunications.
Our work in optical metrology is mainly through cooperation with National Metrology Institute and is towards developing new primary standards of length. Also, we have developed two-wavelength LIDAR for continuous monitoring of aerosols in the atmosphere.
We begin with experimental investigations of granular systems, testing our models of behavior of various granular systems under different perturbations.
